Latest from Castle Hill

In Trench 2 we are excavating the rampart associated with the ditch in Trench 1. The scaffold rail visible on the slope is roughly where the original wooden face of the rampart would have been. We have revealed two large postholes in this area which would have formed part of the rampart structure. The rampart was constructed
of wood, but was filled with chalk rubble excavated from the ditch below. The rampart may have originally been several metres high, but now survives about 2 m high above the original landsurface.

In the top of the rampart a number of dark patches can be seen which are the traces of Roman pits. We have found a number of Roman features on the hilltop, but no evidence of buildings. However, excavations by the Time Team in the field below Round Hill found the remains of several Roman buildings.
