Excavation this week has concentrated on the counter-scarp. The digging has revealed a series of tip lines in the chalk core of the mound showing that, during the original construction, the chalk excavated from the ditch was tipped over the slope to form the counter-scarp.

The counter-scarp side of the ditch. We are excavating to the original ground level of this, which is approximately one third of the way down the slope seen in this picture.

Excavation in the ditch has recovered a couple of human bones and Roman pottery, further suggesting the use of the site as a burial ground during the Roman period.
