Latest from Castle Hill

We are still excavating the Roman layers that have built up behind the rampart, which contain large quantities of pottery, animal bone and a variety of metal finds, mainly nails but including a possible arrowhead. Below these deposits chalk and cobbled surfaces are appearing that are likely to be associated with the rampart itself.

The rampart itself is being excavated on the edge of the hill, and changes in soils (chalk and darker loams) visible in the sections suggest that we are beginning to reveal the different stages of rampart construction.
